Frequently Asked Questions
FEES AND INSURANCE
IN-NETWORK
I am in in-network (INN) provider for Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS). This means I have agreed to accept the negotiated rate your insurance has contracted for services.
OUT-OF-NETWORK
I am an out-of-network (OON) provider for all other insurance plans. However, if you have out of network coverage, you may qualify for reimbursement of a portion of your fee from your insurance carrier. Please contact your insurance provider to verify if you have out-of-network coverage. A super bill is provided for services rendered.
The following is a guide to assist you when consulting your benefits representative. Please allow for 15-30 minutes of your time when calling your insurance carrier. The following prompts may be used as a guide:
"I am calling to verify my coverage for routine outpatient mental or behavioral health services".
"Do I have coverage for out of network mental or behavioral health services?"
If Yes, "Do I have in network or out of network deductible or co-insurance?". If so, “How much of my out of network deductible have I satisfied?”. This indicates that you are responsible for meeting your deductible first before the insurance provider begins to reimburse any portions of your fees paid.
"What is the reimbursement rate for out of network coverage?". The representative may say (i.e: 80/20, 70/30, 60/40 or some variation depending on your plans contract). In essence, this means once you have met your out of network deductible, your insurance will reimburse anywhere between 40-80% of the fees paid. Sometimes this is comparable, equal to or less than an in network co-pay.
If No, this indicates that your insurance does not cover you for any out-of-network benefits. You may choose to see an In-Network provider or can decide to pay privately. Benefits of private pay offers you more control and privacy of your care without the limitations an insurance carrier may impose. If you choose to proceed, you maybe able to use your employers HSA or deduct on your taxes as a medical expense however, you should consult your financial advisor.
